Steps

  1. Look up the diffusion coefficient of the appropriate HSL in water at 25oC, Table 4-1.
     
  2. Scale the value of Daq down to estimate De. For solutes the size of the HSL, De is approximately 25% of Daq (Figure X)
     
  3. Plug the numbers into Equation 1, making sure that the distance units cancel.
     
  4. Interpret the result. For example, how does the time scale for diffusive penetration compare to the time scale for phenotypic changes (perhaps 10 min)?
